The Cuban cyclist has prevailed over esprint in the second race held in Navarra corresponding to the Womens Elite Classics 2021.

Pamplona, May 14, 2021. Arlenis Sierra Canadilla (AR Monex Womens Team) has been the winner in the second of the two races that have been held in Navarra, corresponding to the Womens Elite Classics 2021, departing from Pamplona and arriving at the Navarrese capital itself, after traveling 124.8 kilometers. Behind the Cuban cyclist, Ruth Winder (Trek – Segafredo), second; and Annemiek Van Vleuten (Movistar Team), who finished third.

28 teams and 157 runners have participated in this second and fearsome day with a single port on the route (El Perdón) but with seven walls to face: Olaverri, Tiebas, Biurrun, Tirapu, Artajona, Zariquiegui and Galar.

The classic of professional women in Navarra has hardened its route this year and has welcomed the most outstanding cyclists on the international scene who, of course, have not disappointed in the two days as they pass through the Navarran roads. Today’s race has moved from the beginning with many escape attempts, but always with the favorite riders controlling the first positions. The stage has been very nervous.

The longest break came in the last part of the stage with the break of six riders: Van Vleuten, Fisher Black, Moolman-Pasio, Elisa Longo, Lucinda Brand and Marta Cavalli. But the joy of this sextet did not last long, which has been absorbed by the peloton so that Mavi García and Elisa Longo, with two kilometers to go, tried again, although without success.

The last attempt was made by Van Vleuten when the race entered the streets of Pamplona. But neither on the asphalt of the Navarran capital has it been successful. The peloton faced the finish line at the sprint and there the fastest proved to be the Cuban Arlenis Sierra Canadilla who, in addition to winning the stage, broke the hegemony of Van Vleuten, winner of three of the last four classics held in Navarra; Idoia Eraso from Pamplona (Laboral Kutxa – Euskadi Foundation) has had the honor of being the first runner from Navarra to cross the finish line.

Lekunberri, May 13, 2021. Annemiek Van Vleuten (Movistar Team) has been the winner of the first of the two races held in Navarra, corresponding to the Womens Elite Classics 2021, starting from the Hotel Ibaisek (Zudaire) and Arrival in Lekunberri, after 128.3 kilometers traveled. Second was Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx) and third, Elisa Longo (Trek – Segafredo)

The best female professional cycling in the world has returned to Navarra for the third consecutive year and Van Vleuten has also done so proving to be the best. It should be remembered that the Dutch cyclist was the winner last year in the two classics also held in Navarra.

28 teams and 158 runners started this afternoon from the Hotel Ibaisek in Zudaire to tackle eight mountain positions, six in the third category and two in the second category, on a demanding day due to the route and the rain that has not stopped falling along throughout the entire stage.

The peloton stretched and shrunk as the kilometers passed until, finally, after so much swinging, there was a cut with sixty runners in the lead. More kilometers, more ports and more cuts with small groups that were taking advantage.

At the last climb of the race, the port of Muguiro, Van Vleuten, Vollering, Longo, Moolman-Pasio, Cavalli and Harvey were alone at the head of the test. It was the last kilometers of the day and, at that moment, Van Vleuten (Movistar Team) forced the rhythm of the break to leave alone and reach the Lekunberri goal first. Of course, the other five riders have crossed the finish line brushing against the wheel.

The current world champion, Annemiek Van Vleuten, leaves her stamp as she passes through Navarra

The Dutch cyclist Annemiek Van Vleuten, from the Australian team Mitchelton – Scott, has been the winner of the first of the two classic UCI World Tour women’s cycling that are held today and tomorrow in Navarra. The current world champion crossed the Lekunberri goal first, followed by the Spanish María Victoria García, from the Italian team Ale’btc Ljubljana, and in third place the Dutch  Anna Van der Breggen, from the Dutch team Boels Dolmans Cyclingteam. .

The first women’s cycling classic that has been held in 2020 has left Pamplona to finish in Lekunberri, with a route of 118.3 kilometers. The day has been hard on a route with four mountain passes, continuous steep slopes and a very demanding route. The first two passes of the stage – Ulzurrun and Etxauri – have been lived by the grouped peloton and leaving no options for getaways.

On the third climb of the day, the Guembe peak, it was when the peloton was completely broken, leaving a group of 10 runners ahead. The escape has been gradually losing troops and increasing distances between the ten runners that made it up. With an enormous pedaling rhythm, in the last pass of the race, the Alto de Zuarrarate, Van Vleuten, Mavi García and Van der Breggen have been opening a gap, who have no longer given respite to their road companions. Among the three was the winner.

The Dutch Van Vleuten was the first to open space to reach the Lekunberri goal alone, followed, 18 seconds later, by an excellent Mavi García and, 27 seconds, Van der Breggen entered.

Tomorrow, Friday, July 24, the second and last round of the two Clásicas Féminas de Navarra will be held. It will leave Pamplona, to travel 122.9 kilometers, and will also end in the capital of the Autonomous Community.

Both events are registered in the UCI (International Cycling Union) world calendar in the elite women’s category.
